Chef Anton

Two Time United Stated Trick Shot Champion

Welcome back to Chef Anton’s Magical Menu of Pool Ball Wizardry.  Thank you for all of your positive comments concerning last month's delicacy & for your entries into my contest.

For those of you who feel there is nothing new under the sun, you will love this month’s trick shot called Paul Sargent’s Twist on a Classic.

Paul Sargent from Pottstown, PA sent me this intriguing twist on a classic.  (thus the title of the shot).  Here is the shot as described by this evil mastermind.  “We all know of the old hustle where you balance a coin on top of an object ball on the foot spot. You then then draw a circle with the chalk and bet the mark that he can't hit the object ball with the cue ball and knock the coin out of the circle. Well I carried this one step farther one day when someone tried that hustle on me. Not only did I knock it out of the circle (learned that one years ago) but when the cue ball return I fired it back at the coin and buried it under the rail. I was somewhat surprised as I expected the cue ball to hit the coin and  become an airborne missile flying towards the wannabe hustler who tried to get me in the first place. After playing with cueballs and quarters for about an hour, I found out that I could place that quarter on the foot spot inside that chalk circle (on the cloth, no object ball balancing act required anymore) and shoot that quarter out of the circle with the cueball nearly 100% of the time. As if that wasn't enough, I found out that I could put that quarter on the foot spot, take cueball in hand behind the head string and spot-shot the quarter into a pocket. I first did this around 1990 or so and no one has ever seen it before when I do it.  It's easy to line up customers with this one since they almost always have seen the first part where you knock the coin off the object ball out of the circle. But ask them to knock the coin out of the same circle (or pocket it for that matter) and they will swear it can't be done. They either launch the cueball across the bar trying to do it or, my preferred method, I demonstrate how "easy " it is and bet them a drink or maybe $10 that they can't do it in say 3-5 tries. After you shoot it out of the circle, they will almost certainly line up again for a chance to win back their money when you tell them you will pocket the coin on the same shot.

This shot takes a good stroke, medium speed and depends a lot on the type of cloth and how clean or dirty it is. The cue ball must be spinning backwards or at least sliding when it hits the coin and it will drag it along with it. Any forward roll in the cueball causes it to jump the coin. (I actually told a guy he had to shoot hard once. I hit hard with lots of draw for the make, he just hit hard and sent the cueball nearly 40 feet across the room) If you want to pocket the coin, use the same stoke with draw or low-left (or low -right depending on what pocket you are aiming for) and cross the edge of the coin to push it to the side towards the pocket. I have even put a second coin in the pocket and made the "combination" to pocket both coins.”

Thanks again to Paul Sargent for his truly unique Twist on a Classic.  For his efforts, not only does he get to be published, but he received a FREE copy of Chef Anton’s Magical Menu of Pool Ball Wizardry.

Good luck and Bon Appetit.

I need your help.  I am in search of learning every “betcha” in existence.  For example, the oldest pool betcha known to man is where the three ball are balanced on the end rail in a pyramid configuration, and you bet your mark you can hit the other two balls first.  This is exactly what I am interested in finding.

So if you know any “grifts”, even if they do not apply to pool, send it to me immediately.  I will give an autographed video for every “betcha” sent to me that I have not seen before.  If you are not sure if I have seen it or not, send it anyway.  Please e-mail me at Betcha@ChefAnton.com or mail your entries to:
